Permanent Account Number (PAN)

Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a ten-digit alphanumeric number, issued by the Income Tax Department, to any person who applies for it. PAN enables the department to link all transactions of the person with the department. These transactions include tax payments, TDS/TCS credits, returns of income/wealth/gift/FBT, specified transactions, correspondence, and so on. PAN, thus, acts as an identifier for the person with the tax department.

What are the documents required to obtain a PAN?
A signed Form 49A along with the identity proof and address proof of the applicant is required. For other entities, proof of incorporation or registration like Partnership Deed, Certificate of Incorporation, etc. along with the address proof is required.
Can an Assessee have two or more PAN?
The holding of more than one PAN card by an assessee is illegitimate and government requires such individuals/HUFs/non-individual.
Can a minor have a PAN?
Yes. Minor can also apply for a PAN Card and the Income Tax Department also allots PAN cards to minors without any hassles.
